If you’re a parent, you’ve likely heard the term ‘STEM’ being thrown around within the education community. However, unless you have a very science/maths/technology related learner, it’s not exactly clear what STEM is and how its application can help your student succeed. So, today we are going to dive into what exactly STEM is and how it can be used to benefit you!
‘STEM’ stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and is a broad term used to group together these disciplines within education. An interdisciplinary approach, the STEM world aims to combine the characteristics of each of these subjects in an applied manner to help coach problem solving and pattern-related skillsets.
The whole point of ‘STEM’ being a blended program is to help develop all four disciplines into one skillset, then being able to be used to achieve jobs in a wider field. With our increasingly online world, the importance of learning STEM cannot be understated.
Some schools offer ‘STEM’ as a course, whereas some others offer the individual academic disciplines to be blended later. Most schools also include computing skills into the STEM curriculum (including coding, programming and the like) as software engineering is becoming increasingly important as technology advances.
STEM learning is more important than ever in 2021, so even if your student isn’t so enthusiastic about picking up a calculator, try and get them into some form of STEM activity to broaden their learning experience. Programs such as Minecraft Education or our range of STEM tools can help this!
At FSE, we have a range of educators that specialise in STEM skills, so make sure you get in touch with us if your learner needs a boost in this area.
